Conference Announcement

The international conference "The Internet Turning 40: Never-Ending Novelty of New Media Research?" was held in Hong Kong on June 17-19, 2010. This event was designed for scholars to discuss the past, present, and future prospects of new media research. It was also organized to celebrate the 45th anniversary of School of Journalism and Communication, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Forty years have passed since October 1969, when ARPANET was created to mark the birth of the Internet in media history. What have we learned, as new media researchers, about the impact of the Internet upon political, economic, and psychological processes? About the shaping of communication technology under social, cultural, and organizational constraints? And about the development of theories, methods, and pedagogical tools to account for the new transformations of the Internet age, both worldwide and in the Asia-Pacific? Can there really be never-ending novelty of new media research? If so, how can it be maintained? What are the challenges? How to ensure the progressive vitality of the field without losing sight of what have been learned in the past? These were the questions addressed in this conference.

This was an event of 2.5 days that consisted of 8 sessions and a roundtabled iscussion on "Teaching New Media: Ideas, Approaches and Reflections", which drew leading academics from around the world.
