The Chinese University of Hong Kong Communication Visiting Scholar Program 2021
Digital Media as Data and Methods
The School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong has been organizing the annual Communication Visiting Scholar Program since 2008. The Program aims to promote academic exchange and links among Chinese-speaking scholars in cultural China and improve the quality of research of the Chinese research community. The Centre for Chinese Media and Comparative Communication Research (The C-Centre) of the School of Journalism and Communication will play host to this program in 2021.
Program Theme 2021
The theme for the 2021 workshop is “Digital Media as Data and Methods”. The fast development of digital media in the past 30 years has introduced new research questions and provided new data sources for social science research. Facing the opportunities and challenges, the emergence of computational social science has made a lot of contributions including research design, data processing, and modeling. Meanwhile, some qualitative related approaches, such as digital ethnography, critical algorithm studies, have been widely used in humanities and social sciences. Given this background, this workshop invites any empirical and innovative studies using digital media data and/or digital methods.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and related travel restrictions, the workshop will be held with a hybrid mode. The School will provide an honorarium for each of the visiting scholars who presented papers online. Meanwhile, for the visiting scholars who can physically attend the workshop, the School will provide accommodation and daily allowance for 13 days from 24 January 2021.
All participants are required to present a paper related to the said theme at the workshop in Chinese. The deadline for the submission of extended abstracts is 15 June 2020 and the full paper submission deadline is 15 October 2020. Please refer to the Chinese version of the workshop pamphlet for details.
