BSSc Global Communications Field Study to Taipei 2019

12/2019

A credit-bearing field trip to Taipei was organised for BSSc Global Communication students during the winter break from 28 December 2019 to 4 January 2020. Following the theme of last summer’s field trip to London on “GLAM” (galleries, libraries, archives and museums), this trip aims to lead students to compare how curation and media contexts differ between western and eastern museums. Before visiting Taipei, the students first went to the Kowloon Walled City and attended guest lectures to prepare themselves.

Led by Prof. Sara Liao, Prof. Donna Chu and Ms. Yuki Chung, joined by Dr. Tanya Kant from the University of Sussex, the group paid visits to National Taiwan Museum, National Palace Museum, Yilan National Center for Traditional Arts, Treasure Hill Artist Village, Huashan 1914 and Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, and explored Dadaocheng and Yilan old town with local guides during their stay in Taiwan. The visits provided an invaluable chance for students to engage with the local community. Students said that they developed a better understanding of Taiwan’s cultural and creative industry by interacting with those local residents and artists who are actively building Taiwan’s cultural scene.

Not only did the trip provide a unique and immersive learning experience for the students, but it also became an unforgettable trip that pulled the cohort even closer than before. Spending the New Year’s Eve away from home with the Global Communication family made the whole experience more memorable.
