I like photography and cinematography and so, I always take pictures as well as videos in my travel as well as everyday life. But, sometimes, a travel in one's homeland can also explore something interesting and meaningful, and can make oneself know more about those nearby cultures. I still take film photography with my Nikon F90x camera on the one hand. But I belong to the first generation of MAYA digital visual effects and computer animation designers in our era of digitization on the other. For me, either the mechanical machine or the digital computer is merely a tool. I enjoy the most the experience, as well as the process, either physically or mentally, in a life of cultures and aesthetics. Here I take this chance to share some traditional photo prints and digital media works of art to our faculties and schoolmates via this cyber network of communication.
By the way, most of my photos and videos are general or untreated raw materials that need some time to manage. Therefore, I choose a series of 4 Black and White photos entitled "Human Nature" from my old collection to share my feeling about life of simplicity within a complex postmodern metropolis like Hong Kong. These 4 pictures not only remind of my years of city culture exploration but also my heydays of darkroom activities for photography that have almost completely displaced by Photoshop and other photo retouching software. However, those physical touches and feelings inside the darkroom such like burning and dotting, contact printing, and film rolling can never be replaced.
Besides, I have roughly edited a short sequence of video showcasing some works of mine with some contributions from other people but not being credited precisely here. I have to say sorry to them. The sequence includes 3 categories of media arts I am interested and I have studied and researched for over a decade: Computer Animation, Motion Graphics and Documentary.
The 3D computer animation is, indeed, a collaborative work with my friends, as well as colleagues, during the period of my study and career as the executive director of our co-founded Opus Media Productions Limited. Except the short trailer before the animated story, the animation is a non-commercial, funny experimental work to make a juxtaposition of 3D computer animation and local Chinese opera culture.
The motion graphics propaganda entitled "Cyberculture & Identity" is my final project for a master degree of art in Screen Design (Motion Graphics) for Film and Television in Kingston University, London. The work successfully got pass during the oral defense by the BBC Art Director who was very critical and failed 3 of my friendly classmates. Their works had been commented as failure in communicating the core concepts with target audiences. My work was exhibited in 2 art exhibitions in London and Hong Kong before.
In my walk of aesthetics exploration, I enjoyed very much the times of my life in London, where I made friendships with a lot of kind Koreans who studied, lived and/or worked there. So, I put a piece of documentary work concerning Korean community and their lives and cultures in Kingston, which I produced and worked as the solo cameraman with the helps from some classmates, especially 3 Koreans. I learned a lot about Korean cultures from the project but I cannot speak Korean at all. Friendship breaks the barrier of cultural difference in a particular sense. Bearing in mind, I never used any tripod during the shooting of the whole documentary including those interviews.
Go and enjoy! Please share with me your feelings and comments. I am still in my slow but enjoyable walk of life and aesthetics, where we may meet in some junction points. |
