Health reporting used to be relegated to the lifestyle section of the newspaper, or the last item on the TV news before sports. But now, after diseases such as Ebola and SARS, the impact of health on global trade and travel has catapulted the issue to front-page news. Irresponsible headlines such as “Ebola Terror Stalks the City” show that now, more than ever, it’s time for responsible journalists to learn the facts and apply the highest ethical standards in reporting.

We are offering you the opportunity to undertake a one-week workshop in English to help meet the challenge of covering health or a full-scale pandemic. We will help you learn the issues, cut through the medical jargon, and equip you with the skills and knowledge to report on this exciting and vibrant issue.

In addition to an introduction to specific diseases, insights into public health strategy and how the health industry works, you will get the chance to learn to cover everything from a pharmaceutical company press release to a full-scale global pandemic.

If you think you will be sitting in a lecture hall, think again. This is a hands-on, skills-based course where the pace is high, and you will be pushed hard to reach the goal of intelligent and ethical health reporting.

Guided by professional journalism trainers with years of experience working for Reuters, you will produce hard-hitting stories based on real-life scenarios. As well as group activities, in which controversial and difficult issues will be tackled by the group, you will get individual attention to tackle your own weaknesses. Don’t worry if your English is not completely perfect. Although the course is conducted in English, we are looking for committed journalists who want to tell the stories of the region with flair and intelligence.

Successful candidates will receive a certificate of attendance from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Thomson Reuters Foundation.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • List the main diseases in the Asian region, and explain the challenges in reporting on them
  • Describe the public health issues facing the region and advocate for overcoming them
  • Act as advocates for good health reporting
  • Recognise and avoid sensationalism in reporting health stories, and define the role of the journalist in informing the public in an ethical way
  • Explain how the health industry works and who are the key players
  • Research and write stories for publication on topical issues which are accurate and free from bias
