So long, farewell
As a semester comes to an end, university graduates go their separate ways,
and the familiar settings of lecture rooms become a place of nostalgia. A new
page is beginning, while all lies ahead are uncertainties and anticipation.
Hong Kong is an ever-changing city. As land resources are scarce,
redevelopment projects become an inevitable step for re-vitalising the city.
Nostalgia is often a luxury.
Urban Renewal Authority is often under fire for its redevelopment projects.
Our Periscope team visited Kwung Tong, Nga Tsin Wai Village and ¡§Trainers
Street¡¨ to listen to the voices of local residents and shop owners. Some activists
grumbled that the government has not deemed the conf lict between
shop owners and residents. And the team has also interviewed the
Development Bureau to get some answers on government¡¦s renewal strategies.
Local creativity industry struggles to blossom in the highly-competitive
and commercialised environment in Hong Kong. Varsity interviewed a multitasking
author-talk show host, To Kit and a fresh director, Patrick Kong Pakleung.
He is better known as Yip Lim-sum, and has recently put his third
movie, L for Love, L for Lies, on the big screen. Varsity talks to him and finds
out more about his attitude towards love.
Following our voyage to Taiwan in the last issue, Varsity brings you to
Beijing to witness the preparation for the Olympic Games.
In this semester, our editing and reporting teams have matured after
overcoming many rise and falls. I would like to express my gratitude to our
readers for your support, and to all who helped us along the way.
A heart-felt thank you to all the editors and reporters, who stood by each
other for four months. Varsity will come back again in the next academic year
with a new editorial team. Good luck and have a wicked summer.
