An interactive poster presented by Professor Kecheng Fang, an Associate Professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), has received the Top Poster Award at the 75th Annual International Communication Association (ICA) Conference. The award-winning poster, based on the paper titled “(De)Colonizing Knowledge Production: Experiences of Non-Western Communication Scholars in the Academic Publication Process,” was recognized for its innovative approach and significant contribution to the discourse on academic inequalities.
Professor Fang co-authored the research with Mian Wei, a PhD student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an undergraduate alumna of the School of Journalism and Communication at CUHK. Their work delves into the critical issue of the systemic challenges and inequalities faced by Global South scholars in the academic publication process.
Breaking from the traditional poster format, Professor Fang and Ms. Wei transformed their research into an engaging, interactive board game. They hand-drew the game board and designed cards based on in-depth interviews with scholars from the Global South and journal editors. Conference attendees were invited to play as scholars from either the Global North or Global South, navigating the complex and often fraught journey of academic publishing. Through the roll of a dice and scenario-based gameplay, players experienced firsthand the additional hurdles and systemic biases that scholars from the Global South frequently encounter.
The interactive and immersive nature of the presentation drew significant attention and praise, sparking deep and meaningful discussions among the many scholars who participated. The game format provided a unique and powerful way to understand and empathize with the structural barriers that exist in academic knowledge production.
The poster was selected as the top one among all posters across divisions presented at ICA on that day.
