Varsity, the English language practicum magazine of the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, turns 20 in 2013. To commemorate this milestone, two events were held for distinguished guests, Varsity alumni, students and teachers to come together, share ideas, renew friendships and celebrate.
On 11 April 2013, five veteran media professionals conducted a talk to share views on “20 Years of English Language Media in Hong Kong”. They included Mr. Stephen Vines (the founding Chief Editor of the Eastern Express newspaper and satirical news magazine Spike), Mr. Frank Proctor (the former Newsweek’s general manager for Asia and international circulation director, and publisher of Muse magazine), Mr. Mark Tjhung (Editor-in-Chief of the Time Out Hong Kong), Mr. Wang Feng (Digital Editor of the South China Morning Post) and Ms. Joyce Lau (Education Editor at the International Herald Tribune).
The talk was stimulating and well-attended by more than 60 students and people in the field of journalism. It was a good opportunity to review how English language media evolved in the past 20 years and to look ahead at what the future holds.
In addition, Varsity 20th Anniversary Dinner was held on 12 April 2013 in Tsim Sha Tsui. About 150 guests, teachers, staff members, alumni and students attended this joyful banquet. It was a great occasion to foster inter-generational ties.
To mark this significant occasion, each participant of the talk and banquet received a copy of the 20th Anniversary Commemorative Publication (PDF Version).
