The School of Journalism and Communication of The Chinese University of Hong Kong(CUHK) welcomes applications to our full-time PhD Programme through the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS). Main round applications to the PhD in Communication Programme must apply HKPFS at the same time. The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of HK$27,600 and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$13,800 per year for a period up to three years.
PHD PROGRAMME IN COMMUNICATION, CUHK
- Established in 1965, the School of Journalism and Communication has the longest history of communication research and education in Hong Kong.

HONG KONG PHD FELLOWSHIP SCHEME
Our School is delighted to invite both local and non-local postgraduate students to apply for our PhD Programme and undertake four years of PhD study in Hong Kong via the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme.
Established in 2009 by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC), the Scheme aims to attract outstanding students in the world to pursue their PhD degree programme in Hong Kong. The Fellowship generously provides financial supports. The amount includes:
- A monthly stipend of HK$27,600 and
- A conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$13,800 per year for a period of up to three years.
ELIGIBILITY
- Those who are seeking admission as new full time PhD students in UGC-funded institutions of Hong Kong, irrespective of their country of origin and ethnic background, should be eligible to apply.
- Applicants should demonstrate outstanding qualities of academic performance, research ability / potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.
- Applicants are required to fully comply with CUHK admission requirements and our PhD Programme admission requirements.
SELECTION CRITERIA
While the academic excellence is of prime consideration, the Review Panels will take into account, but is not limited to, the six yardsticks below for the selection of candidates:
- Academic excellence;
- Research ability and potential;
- Cultural diversity;
- Institutional support;
- Communication, and interpersonal skills; and
- Leadership abilities, and societal responsibility
APPLICATION
The Scheme calls for applications from 1 September 2023. Applicants should submit initial application to the RGC through their on-line application system, and will be assigned a Reference Number. Applicants should then submit the full application through CUHK’s Online Admission System and quote the RGC Reference Number.
- The application deadline of the scheme is 1 December 2023 at Hong Kong Time 12:00noon
- Start the application as early as possible in view of the need of selection procedures and various supporting documents required.
