The book “Chief Executive Election, Media, Public Opinion” is launched in the Book Fair 2012. The book contains various articles with in-depth analysis on the role and impact of media and public opinion during the Chief Executive election. The book launch was held on 18 July 2012, the first day of the Book Fair. Speakers of the day include Prof. Clement So, Professor of School of Journalism and Communication, CUHK; Ms. May Chan, Chairperson of the Journalism Education Foundation; Mr. Ngan Shun Kau, Editor-in-Chief of Cosmos Bookstore; Mr. C.K. Lau, Principal Lecturer of Department of Journalism, HKBU; Mr. Siu Yue Hei, the Principal Research Executive of the Centre for Communication and Public Opinion Survey, CUHK; and Mr. Allan Au, veteran journalist.
The book covers the Chief Executive Election and discusses media reporting during the period. It aims to understand the formation and impact of public opinion, and teaches the readers how to analyze news and interpret the results of public opinion survey. It also demonstrates how newspaper content analysis can be conducted. The book contains an election calendar, summary of newspaper headlines for major events, and commentary articles on media and public opinion. A free DVD is also attached with videos explaining basic information on public opinion survey, results of some public opinion surveys, and full version of the Chief Executive Candidates TV Debate.
Ms. May Chan, Chairman of the JEF, said that the book not only serves to keep historical records but also with journalism educational purpose in analyzing and studying the relationship between media and politics. Besides, it provides a chance for journalists to reflect their roles during this period of Hong Kong history, and whether neutrality and loyalty to local citizens are upheld when handling these news.
Prof. Clement So, Professor of the School of Journalism and Communication, is the editor of the book. He said the election atmosphere is particularly tense this year with non-stop scandals. Suspicious media intervention was involved and public opinion has its significant impact. The election also shows the political interests behind each candidate which worth a detailed record and analytical studies from different perspectives.
Other books co-published by the Journalism Education Foundation (JEF) and the School of Journalism and Communication in recent years include the “Sichuan Earthquake: Reflections of Hong Kong Journalists” in 2008, the “One Person, One Story” in 2010 and the “Stories behind the Scoops” in 2011.

The book is priced at $98 in major bookstores. Any profit from the book will be used for educational purpose by the JEF. The School’s students, alumni and staff enjoy discount price for the book.
