Monday.COME “Reflecting on the Ideas of University (2009): Progress, Profit and Plight”
What is university? We have only started to reflect on this question in 2009, the first year after the global financial crisis, marked by the continuing “industrialization”, “marketization”, and “internationalization” of higher education. How to prevent universities from becoming a subsidiary of the neoliberal system worldwide? This is a serious question confronting Hong Kong, mainland China, and beyond. What can we do as inhabitants of the ivory tower? Do we have to choose between the discourses of progress and profit on the one hand, and plight on the other? Or can we have other, more interesting imaginations? In this last Monday.COME of 2009, we are pleased to have Prof. Hui Po-keung from the Department of Cultural Studies, Lingnan University, and Prof. Jack Qiu from School of Journalism and Communication, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, sharing their thoughts on the above questions before a session of collective reflection.
