“The People’s Art and Labor Movement”

Ms. So graduated in 2000 from the Department of Government and Public Administration, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and took part in a drama related to the June 4th incident. Three years later, she came into contact with labor unions in the mainland through people’s theatre activities. She joined a Hong Kong organization that is concerned about mainland unions. Over ten years, So has been fighting for labor rights and involving in people’s theatre in the mainland.

The people’s art is a way to tell the workers’ story and challenge the cultural hegemony. From 2009 onwards, So was on the committee of the Beijing Workers’ Cultural Art Festival for three consecutive years. In 2012, she brought the festival to Hong Kong. In the free society of Hong Kong, it is hard to imagine the last cross-border workers cultural festival was The Workers’ Fun Fair in 2000.
