Public Lecture by Fulbright Senior Specialist Mike Chinoy

Mike Chinoy, Fulbright Senior Specialist and former CNN Senior Asia Correspondent, gave a public lecture on “The Changing Media Landscape and its Impact on Journalism” at the Chinese University of Hong Kong on 27 March 2010. The function was jointly organized by the university’s School of Journalism and Communication and the Journalism Education Foundation.

Chinoy began his career working for CBS News and NBC News in Hong Kong in the 1970s. He spent 24 years as a foreign correspondent covering the Asia-Pacific Region for CNN. He had reported on the most important events in Asia since the mid-1970s, including the death of Mao Zedong, Tiananmen Square crisis, Hong Kong handover, elections and political crises in Taiwan, and developments in North Korea.

At the lecture, Chinoy explained how the media’s news operation had changed since the 1970s. From the days when television had only one major newscast in the evening and newspapers brought people the news in the morning, the news cycle has since become non-stop, with an emphasis on 24-hour, live reporting. While the emergence of global satellite networks and the rise of Internet and social media are challenging traditional notions of journalism, Chinoy expressed his optimism for the media’s future development and was confident that journalists would continue to play an irreplaceable role. Chinoy fielded a wide range of questions from the audience, including working journalists, students and teachers. After the lecture, he shared his valuable experiences with journalism students at a tea gathering.
