Dr. Kecheng Fang, Assistant Professor at the School of Journalism and Communication at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, received the Early Career Award from the Association for Chinese Communication Studies (ACCS) in November 2024. The award recognizes his exceptional contributions to the field of Chinese media and communication research.
Founded in 1991, the ACCS is one of the major associations for Chinese communication scholars. Its Early Career Award honors scholars who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and shown great promise in the early stages of their careers. Dr. Fang, who received his Ph.D. from the Annenberg School at the University of Pennsylvania in 2019, has established himself as a leading early-career researcher in the field of Chinese journalism and political communication. He has published 18 peer-reviewed journal articles in top academic journals, including The International Journal of Press/Politics, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, and Information, Communication & Society. His research explores the complex interplay between technological and social forces in shaping China’s information landscape, with particular attention to digital innovation and evolving journalistic practices. He has secured several competitive research grants as a principal investigator, including the Early Career Scheme from the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong. Last year, he co-founded the Chinese Journalism Research Network (CJRN), where he played a pivotal role in building a vibrant and supportive community for scholars working in this field.
“I am impressed by the depth and breadth of Kecheng’s knowledge, his sharp analytical mind, and his unwavering dedication to producing scholarship of the highest caliber,” said Dr. Joseph M Chan, Emeritus Professor of the School who has been Dr. Fang’s mentor and nominated him for the award.
Dr. Fang plans to build on what he has achieved to continue to produce impactful research with practical implications, with an emphasis on the roles of technologies such as AI in reshaping the media landscape, in the next stage of his career development.
The award was presented at the ACCS annual meeting during the National Communication Association (NCA) conference in New Orleans. Dr. Fang also won a Top Paper Award for his co-authored paper with Taoqiang Chen, who recently graduated from the School’s undergraduate program.
