Mini-lecture II

Topic: Who knows your secret? Digital surveillance on social media platforms
Speaker: Prof. Oliver Chan, Assistant Professor of School of Journalism and Communication
Date: 26 March 2022 (Sat)
Time: 12noon – 1pm
Format: ZOOM meeting
Medium of Instruction: Cantonese

Brief description of the lecture: It is a scenario that you may have experienced: seeing a personalized advertisement in your social media feed after talking about something you are interested in. Are social media listening to you? Who knows your secret? Are you being tracked online and why? In this mini lecture, we will explore these questions. First, we will introduce the concept of digital surveillance. With every click, swipe, like, and view, social media users produce a wealth of data about themselves and the world they live in. Second, we will discuss how users become the product—rather than the customers—of social media. Finally, we will conclude by discussing the social implications of digital surveillance and privacy in the age of social media.
