Establishment of Professor Timothy Yu Communication Education Fund

The year of 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the School of Journalism and Communication. The School is particularly grateful for the generous donation of HK$1 million by Professor Timothy Yu’s wife, Mrs. Helen Yu to set up the “Professor Timothy Yu Communication Education Fund” for nurturing the new generation and for long-term development of our School.

Professor Timothy Yu is a pioneer in Journalism education in both China and Hong Kong. He was the Department Chairman of Journalism and Communication, who had served the longest years for this post from 1974 to 1982. To express our deep gratitude, the School held a donation ceremony for the establishment of “Professor Timothy Yu Communication Education Fund cum Photo Exhibition in Memoir of Professor Timothy Yu” on 12 September 2015 at the Centre for Chinese Media and Comparative Communication Research, CUHK. Officiating guests included: Mr. John Yu and his wife, Mrs. Mary Yu; Mr. Heung Shu Fai, Member of Board of Trustees, New Asia College, CUHK; Professor Tom Wan, Secretary of Board of Trustees, New Asia College, CUHK; Professor Anthony Fung, Director of the School; Professor Li Ke Dong, Director, Research Institute of Educational Technology, South China Normal University; Professor Hung-fu Ho Wang, Head of Department, Department of Journalism and Communication, Chu Hai College of Higher Education; Professor Philip Cheng, Former Department Chairman, School of Journalism and Communication, CUHK; Professor Kenneth Leung, Master of Shiu Pong College, The University of Macau; Professor Paul Lee, Former Director, School of Journalism and Communication, CUHK; Mrs. Yvonne Siu, BBS, Member of Executive Committee, Society for the Promotion of Hospice Care and Professor Clement So, Former Director, School of Journalism and Communication, CUHK.

This was a memorable day with many alumni came from different generations. At the ceremony, Prof. Anthony Fung commended that “Professor Yu hold lofty ideals, he has sown seeds in the School of Journalism and Communication, and let the seeds grow healthily. The alumni who are sitting here today witnessed the flowering process. Professor Yu was a master of communication education.” The guests paid tribute to Professor Yu and shared their good memory in their school days. There was a video broadcast about an interview of the late Professor Timothy Yu. After the Eulogy by Mr. John Yu, Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Yu and the Vivente Chanters presented the song dedication which was touching.

The Photo Exhibition in Memoir of Professor Timothy Yu was held at the same time. It showed his fruitful life, passion and contribution in Journalism education.
