“Labour Movement and the Formation of Collective Negotiation System in China”

Duan Yi established the first partnership law firm in 1988 and the Guangdou Laowei Law Firm (the Laowei Firm) in 2005 that aims to protect the rights of labour workers. He is now the director of the Laowei Firm and a professor of the Faculty of Law at the Renmin University of China. He is also a member of the China Law Society Social Law Studies Institute and a researcher at the Research Center for Labour Law and Social Security Law of Shenzhen University.

In recent years, Duan’s law firm has been the law consultant for many labour NGO’s and unions. The Laowei Firm engages actively in exploring collective negotiation and has successfully helped the labour of foreign, local and national enterprises in such negotiations. The firm has held forums in Beijing and Hong Kong on the Collective Negotiation System in China, as well as published the academic journal Research on The System of Collective Bargaining. The firm not only elaborates the labour rights in China, it also trains workers for labour movements and has a strong influence on grass-root workers.
