“My Perfect Summer Semeste”

“I was never a protester or a community youth member, but in the past few months, I became the leader who shouted slogans against (our mother school) converting to a Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS) school.”

“Traditional schools joining the DSS isn’t news anymore. In the past eleven years, at least twelve traditional schools switched over. People have quietly accepted that this is what the trend should be, and no one seemed to have realized that this was actually a controversial matter.”

“I am certain that if St. Stephen’s had converted to a DSS school ten years earlier, I would never have had the chance to study there and become the university student I am now.”

These are the words from LIU Shuk Wah, a year-three student from the School of Journalism and Communication. Her refusal to submit herself to fate has earned herself a perfect summer semester – her mother school finally gave up on joining the DSS.

In resisting fate, change is possible.

The persistence of our younger generation in this incident has led us to wonder if it holds any lesson for the many who have chosen to keep silent? Liu Shuk Wah will share with us her experience and reflections.
