Monday.COME “Deconstructing Foxconn”

Why so many suicides happened at the Foxconn factories in China earlier this year? What on earth are the organizational and social problems behind? From May to August 2010, more than 60 students and teachers from 20 universities in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China conducted a joint investigation on Foxconn. Prof. Jack Qiu and graduate students from the School of Journalism and Communication joined them to shoot a 19-minute video, which comprises interviews with workers and a survivor who attempted to jump to her death. The video ends with scenes of Foxconn workers enjoying themselves in roller-skating playgrounds, discos and Internet cafés. They look so similar to university students. Yet, they are also so different. The Foxconn tragedies call for serious reflection and reform among all relevant parties, including us inside the ivory tower.
