Tertiary institutions in Hong Kong have been actively recruiting students from the Mainland in recent years. The proportions of “Mainlanders” in both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes have been rising. Among these students, many choose to stay behind and work in Hong Kong after graduation. They are not under the spotlights of local media: they are no “new immigrants”, nor are they “unguided travelers”. However, is it easy for them to acculturate into Hong Kong society and adapt to Hong Kong’s lifestyle? What kind of city Hong Kong is from the living experience of these mainland students? What are the differences in their imaginations and perceptions of Hong Kong before they came, when they were studying here and after they have graduated and now work in this place? We have invited several students and alumni from the School of Journalism and Communication and the Department of Government and Public Administration to share their “Hong Kong stories”. We also hope that this gathering will provide a chance for students of different background to express their impressions of Hong Kong society.
