Added to the plight of two decades of civil war, the people of Somalia in East Africa experienced this summer the most severe drought in decades, a hike in grain price to a historic level, and the massive decease of livestock. Nutrition crisis and the subsequent problems it engendered have spread to adjacent regions. The news media seldom report the situations in African countries. Behind those meager images in the media, what are the real situations these victims find themselves in? What difficulties are they facing? Other than being “natural” disasters, what are the geopolitical and social factors behind this nutrition crisis in African countries? Monday.COME has invited an alumna of the School of Journalism and Communication, Ms. Gloria Chan, as a guest on 3 October. Ms. Chan is the Director of Communications of the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Hong Kong and she will analyse this humanitarian crisis in East Africa and introduce the relief works carried out by NGOs.
