Public Lecture by Reuters Asian Managing Editor Brian Rhoads

Mr. Brian Rhoads, Reuters Managing Editor for Asia, gave a public lecture on “Navigating the New News Landscape” at the School on 28 January 2011.

Mr. Rhoads joined Reuters in 1996 and was one of Reuters most senior journalist in China, where he stationed for seven years. He covered the transition of Chinese leadership from Jiang Zemin to the younger leaders headed by Hu Jintao, the surge in global interest in China’s economy, and the six-party talks on North Korea’s nuclear crisis. He was in the team of senior Reuters journalists who interviewed Premier Wen Jiabao both in 2003 and 2006. He had served as Managing Editor for the Americas since 2008, before he came back to Asia in 2010.

In the talk, Mr. Rhoads outlined the new news landscape and challenges for journalists when the Internet keeps reshaping the traditional journalism scene. Especially with the global satellite networks and rising of social media like Twitter or Facebook, Mr. Rhoads stressed the importance for journalism practitioners to differentiate themselves in the new era. After sharing his own career experience with teachers and students, Mr. Rhoads offered valuable advice to new journalists. He also fielded a wide range of questions from the audience.
