Political economy of global communication and media content analysis scholar Prof. Yuezhi Zhao was invited by the School’s Centre for Chinese Media and Comparative Communication Research (C-Centre) to deliver a public talk titled “The Life and Times of “Chimerica”: Global Discourses on U.S.-China Economic Integration, World Financial Crisis, and Power Shifts” on 18 June 2012.

Prof. Zhao is Associate Director and Professor at the School of Communication of Simon Fraser University. She is also Changjiang Scholar Chair Professor to teach at the Communication University of China, Beijing. She has conducted research in political economy of global communication, media content analysis, media and democracy and communication industries in China.

In this public talk, Prof. Zhao analyzed English press commentaries on the life and times of “Chimerica” from different parts of the world as significant discursive formations that are both reflective and constitutive of competing visions of the world in the context of a protracted economic crisis and global power shifts. The aim was to explore points of convergence and dissonance in the global English language press and to analyze the ideological underpinnings of journalistic discourses that contributed to the construction and contestation of a rapidly evolving global order.
