In addition to the existing News Group (Print Media), Feature & Commentary Group (Print Media), News Group (TV) and Feature & Commentary Group (TV) categories, the Chinese University Journalism Awards this year included a new category – News / Feature & Commentary Group (radio) – added to cover the Radio sector and enhance the comprehensiveness of the Awards.

The Journalism Awards received a large number of submissions this year, with the judges noting that the quality of the entries was remarkably high. Fanny WONG, Chairperson of the Awards Organising Committee, said: “A large number of major news events have occurred in mainland China and Hong Kong during the past two years. With so many important stories to cover, we are delighted to see that many journalists in Hong Kong are equipped with the vision, professionalism and perseverance to provide in-depth, well-balanced and analytical coverage of a broad range of issues.

“After reviewing the entries, I have great admiration for Hong Kong’s journalists. They accept their mission to monitor society and produce stories that inform the public. In reporting on China’s major snowstorms and the Sichuan earthquake in 2008, local journalists wasted no time in travelling to the scene of these major natural disasters. Their news reports and video clips were both shocking and touching. The determination shown by local journalists in bringing the public the latest news in challenging circumstances demonstrates their passion and commitment to excellence. Over the past two years, there have been many outstanding examples of journalistic work that are worthy of compliment.

“I hope all participants in the Awards will take steps to further promote this professional spirit and pass it along to younger generations of journalists in Hong Kong. We hope to see more outstanding entries to the Chinese University Journalism Awards in the future.”
