The School of Journalism and Communication of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (the School) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Thomson Reuters Foundation (the Foundation) today (13 September), expressing the intent to enhance collaboration in organizing professional training programmes for working journalists in Hong Kong and other Asian regions.

The MoU was signed by Prof. Anthony Fung, Director of the School and Ms. Jo Weir, Programme Director of TrustMedia from the Foundation. Mr. Tom Chan, Chief Executive of Journalism Education Foundation Hong Kong Limited, and professors from the School attended the signing ceremony.

At the ceremony, Jo introduced how the Foundation has trained journalists over the past 30 years and how journalist training nowadays should move forward with the rapid development of the world. She said: “Such training programmes are not merely about the training itself but they also give journalists from different countries an opportunity to learn from one another.”

The School and the Foundation have already jointly organized four training programmes since 2011. Over 60 working journalists from local media organizations and countries all over Asia, including Mainland China, Taiwan, Macau, Singapore, the Philippines, Korea, India, Vietnam, etc., participated in the programmes. The trainings include Crisis and Disaster Reporting, Health Reporting, Social Media and Digital Journalism.

Starting from September 2013 to August 2015, the two organizations will continue to organize at least four more professional training programmes for journalists in Asia, and short-term workshops and seminars for local journalists.
