Workshop on Transborder Chinese Movies

Introduction
School of Journalism and Communication of The Chinese University of Hong Kong organizes the CU Visiting Scholar Program annually starting from 2008. “Workshop on Transborder Chinese Movies” was the research theme for the 2008 CU Communication Visiting Scholar Programme.

Objective
To promote academic exchange and links among Chinese-speaking scholars in Cultural China,
To improve the quality of research of the Chinese research community,
To promote the School as the center of Chinese communication research.

Schedule
(1) Nine visiting scholars stayed in Hong Kong for up to one month from 14 January 2008 to carry out intensive academic exchange and research.
(2) Workshop on Transborder Chinese Movies was held on 19 January 2008.

Content: The Workshop consisted of two sessions:

Session 1: Intertextuality in movie language and narrative; and transborder movies development and sales strategies and trans-cultural concepts; discuss how the political and economical changes affect the narrative strategies of Chinese movies.

Session 2: The imaginations of the global and the national in Chinese transborder movies. The desires of globalizing Chinese movies and the implications towards the representations of space and national identity.

Formal Activities

(1) A Talk by Prof. Yin Hong As Prof. Yin Hong was not able to join the Workshop due to his late arrival, we asked him to give a talk individually on 1 February 2008.
(2) A Tour to Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) Visiting Scholars were invited to visit HKFA. They had a private screening of a classic movie and had lunch with the Director of HKFA.
(3) Exchange Sessions Prof. Eric Ma and Prof. Joseph Chan conducted a group session to provide feedbacks on the papers of the visiting scholars at HKFA. The visiting scholars also had talks with individual teachers on an informal basis.
